Health information that really sticks
Three podcast projects at the Department of Health Sciences demonstrate just how diverse health education is today. Researchers and students are bringing current health topics to the microphone, turning laboratory diagnostics into a true-crime case and offering families new perspectives on ADHD. Three formats, three different approaches and plenty of content to listen to.

Health Talk
Research in Focus
Since June 2024, the “Health Talk” podcast has been sparking discussion on current health topics from the worlds of research and society. The podcast features researchers and students from Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, as well as experts and those affected by the issues. In this way, the podcast not only provides insights into specific research questions, but also into various healthcare professions and the corresponding degree programmes.
The first eight episodes focused on the topic ‘Let’s talk about HPV!’, human papillomaviruses and their potential health implications. Today, the range of topics extends from orthoptics and three-dimensional vision, through multiple sclerosis research and interprofessional primary care, to digital therapy companions and the question of how vaccination behaviour has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic.

True Lab Files
When a laboratory result becomes a suspect
True crime with a twist: on the Bachelor’s degree programme in Biomedical Sciences, students Isabella and Sarah have turned the scientific search for clues into a crime story. As part of the ‘Case Studies in Clinical Chemistry Laboratory Diagnostics’ module, first-semester students engaged intensively with selected topics relating to lipid metabolism. The task: to present complex specialist content to their fellow students in a way that is both scientifically sound and creative.
Isabella and Sarah chose lipoprotein(a) – Lp(a) for short – and turned their research into the true-crime podcast episode ‘True Lab Files’. The subject provides a surprising amount of dramatic material: initial suspicions, a decades-long search for clues and, finally, scientific evidence. As early as 1963, the Norwegian geneticist Kåre Berg suspected a link between Lp(a) and cardiovascular disease. Today, Lp(a) is regarded as a major genetic risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Podcast 03
With different ears
Understanding ADHD
What is everyday life like with ADHD? And what can help family members not only to recognise a child’s behaviour, but also to understand it better? These are the questions addressed by occupational therapy students Senta, Hurija and Anna in their podcast ‘Mit anderen Ohren (with other ears) – Understanding ADHD’, which they developed during the final semester of their degree as part of their bachelor’s thesis.
Spanning four episodes, the podcast is specifically aimed at families and relatives of children with ADHD. It combines specialist knowledge with empathetic insights and practical advice. At its heart lies a message that is as simple as it is important: children with ADHD need support and, above all, people who see and understand them.
